A hardy perennial with large, sumptuous plum coloured flowers from May-July. Oriental poppies make a real statement in a mixed or herbaceous border. Grow in fertile, well drained soil in full sun. The individual flowers are usually short-lived, so unless the seed heads are required, deadhead regularly to encourage a longer and better flowering period. For longer-lasting cut flowers, pick when flowers are in bud. Seedheads can be dried and used indoors for decoration. May need staking in exposed positions.
