LANTANA (Verbenaceae)
(BONBONGNIN.) Genus of tender shrubs and perennials, related to the Verbena from South Africa and the Americas. They produce attractive clusters of flowers which attract Butterflies. Lantana camara in particular attracts the Hummingbird Hawk Moth. The leaves have a pungent odour. All parts of the plant are poisonous and particular care must be taken with those species which produce large colourful seed pods, with regards to children. Grow in a loam based compost with plenty of added grit. Trim back in spring to promote a bushy habit. Both L. camara and L. montevidensis need to be kept frost free.
