CALAMAGROSTIS (Poaceae)
These perennial grasses are excellent for ornamental use due to their long-lasting inflorescence (flower spikes) which catch both the light and the breeze adding a calming feeling to the garden. They prefer moist, fertile soil in sun/ part shade but will tolerate poor soils once well established. Tidy up in spring by cutting back old stems before new shoots appear.

CAREX (Cyperaceae)
These sedges come from a variety of habitats around the world including New Zealand, Japan and the British Isles. Some are known as Palm Sedges which are quite different from other sedges in that the leaves are held horizontally from the stems giving a more bushy appearance. There is a Carex for virtually any condition.

These grasses are renowned for their toughness in poor soil conditions. Cultivars of F. glauca are often grown as edging for borders or in gravel gardens and are valued for their striking blue foliage.
