The newly planted shady border in the walled garden. Pulmonaria, Hostas, ferns, Aquilegia, Foxgloves, Ajuga and Ligularia, to name a few,  demonstrate that shade is a real asset, not a problem, in the garden.

This shady border provides more interest early in the year in comparison to the sunny border, as the plants here are, for the most part, adapted to growing in woodland conditions, where they need to get into growth and flower early, before the trees overhead produce their leaves and cast a denser shade, and start to draw moisture from the soil. Here we don`t have the problem of competition from tree roots as the shade is provided by the wall.
