A cultivated form of our native Purple Moor Grass, which is found on moist heaths and moors. It makes a compact upright mound of leaves above which rise purplish flower heads. As autumn approaches the leaves turn a buttery yellow, before dying back in the winter. Cut back in spring before the new growth appears. Prefers soil on the acid soil, not too dry. In hot gardens it may appreciate light shade from hot midday sun. Cool season.
