Nerium oleander

These large evergreen shrubs are renowned for their masses of scented flowers in a wide range of colours, and are widely planted in sub-tropical climates. The scent comes from these masses of flowers, a single flower is only lightly scented. Despite giving the impression they are drought tolerant, they do seem to love a lot of water, lack of which may lead to bud drop. Those plants you see along roads in hot places likely have their roots down into cool moist soil. Tomato food applied during the growing season will promote flowering, and toughen the plants up for winter. Grow in a large pot in a conservatory, using John Innes No. 3 with some added grit, or very sheltered spot outdoors with good drainage, but water well and feed from spring to autumn. Can be pruned hard in spring but be careful because the SAP IS POISONOUS. Throw away any prunings - don't burn them as they will give off a toxic smoke. Minimum minus 7° C.
