Clay Soil

These plants are suitable for growing in heavy or clay soil. Clay soils are heavy, forming large clumps, are difficult to dig and prone to water-logging in the winter and cracking in summer. Despite these problems clay soils are usually highly fertile as the nutrients are retained rather than easily washed away in light sandy soils. If steps are taken to improve the structure of heavy soil then the resulting soil can be very beneficial for plants. For more information on Clay soils please see the RHS website
