Hardy Perennials - Bare Root

Buying bare root perennials is a very effective and economical way of introducing new plants into your garden. They have good root systems which have not been confined to a pot and have enjoyed all the benefits of being grown in natural soil and weather conditions so they will transplant well into your garden and establishment is often better and quicker than with pot-grown equivalents.

Plants should ideally be planted straight away if the ground is moist and not frozen. If you cannot do this, keep them in a cool shady place, insuring the roots are kept moist but not sitting in water. Either wrap the root balls in damp newspaper or temporarily heel them in to a patch of ground and water in. Smaller clumps will benefit from being potted on first and grown on in a sheltered location until they can be planted out.
