An essential plant for cheering up the winter border, this shrub produces masses of stems which start with a yellow colouration at the base, changing through orange into fiery red at the tips. Plant against an evergreen hedge for maximum effect. Unlike C. alba, which is also planted for the same effect, C. sanguinea does not like hard pruning, and is best pruned every 2 - 3 years to about a foot in spring. Leaving some stems unpruned will mean there will be some flowers and fruit for the butterflies and birds.
