Dahlias like a fertile, well drained soil and reasonable moisture levels, just not too dry. They also prefer lots of sun. They are tuberous plants and the fleshy tubers can be prone to frost damage so in cold areas it is often advisable to lift them after the first frost has knocked back the foliage and store the tubers somewhere frost free over winter.
