Plumbago Care

Plumbagos are scrambling plants which, in the wild grow up through other plants for support. So either grow against a trellis or an obelisk in a pot where you can tie the long stems in securely.

They originate from South Africa and are not totally hardy although if you live in a very mild part of the UK where frost is rare you may be able to grow them outside with a bit of protection. Generally they are grown as conservatory plants but are quite happy on the summer patio. Although evergreen in their native habitat we find they are deciduous at low temperatures in the UK. If you have a warm Conservatory which is kept above 10C in winter you may find them to be more evergreen.

They are hungry plants so feed monthly between May and September. A liquid feed Tomato feed with added seaweed is ideal.

Prune lightly after flowering and remove any dead wood in spring, trimming back side shoots to 3 or 4 buds.

Pot Sizes

Unless otherwise indicated our plants are supplied in the following pot sizes according to category. Dimensions refer to either the pot diameter (cm) or volume (litre);

  • Exotics/Conservatory & House Plants, Succulents: mostly as young plants in 7 to 9cm (approx. 0.5 litre)  or 1 litre pots
  • Hardy Perennials, Ferns and Grasses: 1 litre (approx. 12cm diameter)
  • Hardy Shrubs and Climbers: 1.5 or 2 litre

The exact size of plants will vary with the growing season and may be cut back in accordance with normal pruning regimes or to fit in the box if they are excessively tall.
