A vigourous twining climber from Madiera & the Canary Islands, making an unusual foliage plant for a large shady conservatory. Possibly hardy in a sheltered spot in a warm garden, we have one which has survived three cold winters in our Ipswich garden under a hedge. Grow in loam based compost in full light, protected from hot sun and feed monthly in summer. Height 4m+. Minimum 0°C.

Epiphyllum & other epiphytic cacti

In the wild Epiphyllums and Selenicereus grow on the trunks and branches of other plants. They naturally have a rather floppy habit and either need tying in to a support such as a moss pole or you can grow them in a large pot or hanging basket so they can trail over the edge. They like a very free draining compost so either buy a specialist cactus compost or mix your own with 1 part peat free compost and 1 part grit or Pearlite.

Water sparingly do not allow the compost to become too wet. In summer feed every two weeks with cactus fertiliser or half strength Tomato fertiliser to encourage flower formation.

They like bright light and humidity but position away from hot sun. These plants would normally be partially shaded by the plants they grow on so don't want to be subjected to very hot sun in summer.

Pot Sizes

Unless otherwise indicated our plants are supplied in the following pot sizes according to category. Dimensions refer to either the pot diameter (cm) or volume (litre);

  • Exotics/Conservatory & House Plants, Succulents: mostly as young plants in 7 to 9cm (approx. 0.5 litre)  or 1 litre pots
  • Hardy Perennials, Ferns and Grasses: 1 litre (approx. 12cm diameter)
  • Hardy Shrubs and Climbers: 1.5 or 2 litre

The exact size of plants will vary with the growing season and may be cut back in accordance with normal pruning regimes or to fit in the box if they are excessively tall.
