Hardy perennials are the mainstay of the herbaceous border, giving colour through the year for very litte effort and attracting bees and butterflies into the garden.
Clump-forming perennial with attractive toothed leaves and narrow spikes of creamy-white bottle brushes on stiff upright stems through summer.
Scabiosa caucasica 'Miss Willmott'
Large white pin-cushion flowers appear from May to September. A good cut flower but leave some for the bees and butterflies. For well drained soil in full sun - doesn't like cold soggy soil.
Scabiosa colum. sp. ochroleuca 'Moondance'
Compact perennial with masses of pale yellow pincushion-like flowers throughout summer.
Masses of lovely mauve daisies, to 2 cm across, on long stems in summer. For sun and well drained soil. Good for a rockery. Short lived but will seed around. Hardy in mild areas.
A delightful long-flowering perennial for a sunny or partly shaded border, with upright greyish stems carrying numerous slightly off white flowers.
A tuberous plant from South America producing sweetly scented flowers in summer. Best grown in a container, leaving the tubers to become congested seems to improve flowering, as does a cool, frost-free winter rest. Can be grown o£6.50more info....
An unusual cultivar which makes an ideal plant for sun to part shade. The brightly variegated foliage on zig zag stems is topped by sprays of small yellow flowers in late summer.
This graceful species has tall, purple-tinted stems topped by widely branched airy panicles of tiny pale lilac flowers with prominent yellow stamens from July to September.
A beautiful new cultivar flowering in early summer. Pale yellow flowers with cupped petals form a rounded flower, a lovely plant for the bog garden.
Tall spires of white flowers with purple stamens in early summer. A bee magnet.
