Hardy perennials are the mainstay of the herbaceous border, giving colour through the year for very litte effort and attracting bees and butterflies into the garden.
From dark red buds on red stems emerge masses of large nodding double orange and pinky-red flowers. Produced from May to July on this neat-growing perennial, it's ideal for the front of a border.
Longer flowering than older cultivars, this has branching stems of rounded semi-double, rose-like flowers of orange-yellow, with ruffled red margins from late spring-late summer.
A fairly new cultivar, producing beautiful apricot to salmon pink semi-double flowers on red stems over a long period, from May to July with a few flowers later in the year.
Lovely clump forming perennial with nodding, semi-double cherry-pink flowers from early to mid summer.
An eye-catching cultivar with upward facing semi-double red flowers held on dark purple stems. Flowers over a long period, especially if dead-headed.
In contrast to its huge cousin, G. manicata, this mat-forming perennial has small leaves to 9 cm across. For permanently moist soil in sun to part shade.
Robust bulbous plant with beautiful funnel-shaped pink flowers in summer. Borderline hardy.
Sumptuous, ruby-red daisies to 8cm across from July to September. This is a versatile plant equally at home in a mixed or herbaceous border and goes particularly well with ornamental grasses. Attracts bees and butterflies.
Early flowering perennial with large flowers in a range of white and pink shades from January to April. Ideal for a woodland garden.
A beautiful pure white form to go with the pinks and reds. Slightly narrower petals, but still garden worthy. Flowers in late summer into November, lovely with grasses, Asters and Chrysanthemums, and as a cut flower. 9 cm pots.
